The cross-disciplinary course is a transversal teaching unit offered to all degree programmes at the University and represents one of the actions set out in the Gender Equality Plan (thematic area of “integrating the gender dimension into research and teaching content”).
The course includes a range of perspectives and topics. In particular, through contributions from sociology and demo-ethno-anthropological disciplines, the concept of gender is analysed according to the main approaches and developments within gender studies. The gender perspective is used to highlight the social processes involved in the construction of differences and inequalities, analysing their impact on identity formation, social organisation, obligations, and expectations at both individual and societal levels.
From a historical perspective, the course reconstructs the structural reasons behind women’s exclusion from civil and political rights for varying periods (depending on different national histories), while also critically revisiting how citizenship has been conceptualised in the contemporary era. This encourages reflection on the opacity that characterises the relationship between women, individuals from diverse backgrounds, and Western political systems.
In the legal module, the course examines the relationship between law and gender in the European context, the European origins of anti-discrimination law and gender equality, European gender policies, and the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights. It also addresses key gender-related issues such as female leadership, family roles, and gender-based violence.
From an intersectional perspective, the course analyses the construction of models of femininity and masculinity in Islamic thought, the evolution of women’s conditions through selected case studies from Muslim-majority countries and Islamic diaspora contexts, and the emergence and development of feminist movements within both secular and religious frameworks.
Finally, the course focuses on gender-related challenges in science and medicine, reflecting on the gendering of scientific research, the introduction of a gender perspective in technological innovation, and the promotion of health and occupational safety conditions from a gender perspective.
